Kim Joo-hyung is trying to win the Genesis Scottish Open (total prize money of $9 million) on the PGA Tour.

Kim Joo-hyung will compete with top rankers such as defending champion Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele (USA), and Genesis Invitational champion Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) at the Renaissance Club (par 70) in North Berwick, Scotland, for four days from the 11th (Korea Standard Time).

Kim won a special provisional membership on the PGA Tour in 2022 by ranking third alone in the competition, and has since enjoyed a steady rise, tying for seventh in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and winning his first tour victory at the Wyndham Championship in October. Kim also took the lead in the competition last year and finished tied for sixth by struggling to win until the last day. McIlroy, who will play just three weeks after finishing runner-up at the U.S. Open, won the tournament by one stroke with consecutive birdies at 17 and 18 holes last year.

Kim is trying to improve his adaptability to the link course before participating in the season’s last major, The Open, next week at Royal Troon, a prestigious Scottish course with a similar environment to the Renaissance Club. Kim tied for second place at The Open last year.

In addition to Kim Joo-hyung, the competition, sponsored by Genesis, a luxury brand of Hyundai Motor, will also feature teammates from the PGA Tour, including Ahn Byung-hoon, Im Sung-jae, Kim Si-woo, and Lee Kyung-hoon. Park Sang-hyun, Park Ham-woo, and Lee Jung-hwan, who play on the KPGA Tour, are also on the list. Park Sang-hyun qualified as the winner of last year’s Genesis Championship, and Park and Lee Jung-hwan qualified first and second place for the Genesis Awards.

Ahn Byung-hoon, who is participating as the Korean representative at the Paris Olympics next month with Kim Joo-hyung, said in a video interview with Korean reporters ahead of the opening of the event, “I am confident this year because I achieved good results by tying for third place last year,” adding, “I have tried many of these courses, but the fairway is wide. Personally, I like wide courses. Bunkers and hazards are not easy, but I think I was able to do well because these courses were so good.”
