Most recently, Ontario’s and Canada’s leading horse racing operator, Woodbine Entertainment, announced that tickets for this year’s King’s Plate will go on sale on Saturday, May 6, 2023. This edition of the race will be the first one in over 70 years and tickets will be available from 10 a.m. In addition to that, the operator revealed The Plate’s new logo after the previous rebranding.

The King’s Plate is the longest continuously run stakes event in North America and Canada’s most renowned race for three-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred horses. The race was named after Queen Elizabeth II, but after her passing, in December the event was renamed in honour of her son Charles III who took over the crown.

In the press release, from Wednesday, the CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, Jim Lawson commented that the operator was pleased to launch ticket sales and unveil its new brand for The King’s Plate. In his words, the new branding honours traditions while also showcasing the prestigiousness of the historic race in a progressive and contemporary manner.

Mr. Lawson continued by saying that The Plate is the country’s largest race of Canadian Thoroughbreds, and over the years it has become much more – a genuine celebration of the local horse racing industry. He said it is a can’t-miss social event on the Toronto summer calendar. He is now looking forward to celebrating this year’s edition of the race, which will kick off a new era.

This year’s running of the prestigious event will be the 164th one for the CA$1 million in purses race, which as usual will be contested at Woodbine Racetrack. It will be held on Sunday, August 20, 2023. Tickets for the event start at CA$45 a piece and can be bought on Ticketmaster ca and will be available for purchase from 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Lastly, the equine operator said it will release additional details about the tickets for the event soon and additional event spaces and dining rooms will be made available in the upcoming weeks. The King’s Plate is the first leg of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown and is followed by the Prince of Wales Stakes contested at Fort Erie Race Track and the Breeders’ Stakes at the Toronto track.

This week, Woodbine Entertainment also informed that it will be hosting another mandatory payout for its Standardbred Jackpot Hi-5 on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Woodbine Mohawk Park. This time the carryover for the jackpot stands at CA$255,554.45 allowing one horseplayer to win big by submitting a bet on who will be the top 5 finishers for the night.

But prior to that, Ontario’s leading horse racing operator reported that in the fall of 2023, it will be saying goodbye to its long-term CEO and President Jim Lawson. The 64-year-old said it was an honour for him to lead the organization. Now, the operator’s Succession Committee is working on finding a suitable candidate.
