Japanese media showed keen interest in the controversial remarks made by Korean volleyball player Lee Da-young at a recent press conference.

Japanese media “The Digest” said on the 8th, “Lee Da-young, a former setter of the Korean women’s volleyball team, poured oil with her hands on the fire that was completely extinguished,” adding, “They were criticized as identical twin sisters and asked for the understanding of fans and media.”

The sisters Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-young were the best stars of the women’s team in the V League until the 2019-2020 season and were also key members of the national team. Ahead of the 2020-2021 season, Lee Da-young qualified as an FA (free agent) and moved to Heungkuk Life Insurance, Lee Jae-young’s team, drawing a lot of attention.

However, in early 2021, a post was released online that the sisters Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-young were perpetrators of middle school violence, shocking fans. In the case of Lee Da-young, controversy grew when it was revealed that she had held her weapon.

Heungkuk Life Insurance imposed its own disciplinary action on the two of them by suspension from participating in the remaining games of the 2020-2021 season and had them post a handwritten apology, but the controversy did not subside at all.

Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-young left the V-League in disgrace as Heungkuk Life Insurance gave up registration for the 2021-2022 season and other clubs in the V-League Women’s Division did not reach out. The Korea Volleyball Association also made a superpower that permanently stripped the two of their national team qualifications.

Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-young sisters eventually turned their eyes abroad. He continued his career by signing a contract with the Greek volleyball league PAOK.

In the case of Lee Da-young, after establishing himself as the main setter of PAOK, his skills were recognized through the Romanian league the following year, and in the case of the 2023-2024 season, he was active in the French league.

On the other hand, Lee Jae-young failed to step on the court for a long time due to a knee injury, and V-League Pepper Savings Bank attempted to recruit him in October last year, but it failed to be achieved with only confirming his angry fan sentiment. Lee Jae-young has only been training for Ga-woon without his team.

Lee Da-young held a press conference before leaving for France through Incheon International Airport on the 5th and said, “The school violence problem is a problem that happened to me in the second grade of middle school. “I saw it, but I couldn’t play volleyball because I was a twin,” he said. “I wanted to correct that, and I asked for this position once again to apologize to the fans.”

“The school violence case has nothing to do with Lee Jae-young,” he said. “I don’t like it,” he said. “I asked for 100 million won (as a settlement) per person through a lawyer, so it has not been settled yet.”

Summarizing the contents of Lee Da-young’s press conference, the issue of school violence in middle school was an appeal that Jae-young Lee was irrelevant and that her career as an athlete was blocked because she was a twin sister.

However, the eyes of volleyball fans and public opinion are still cold. ‘The Digest’ said, “The status of sisters Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-young fell overnight (after the controversy over school violence)” and “I once posted an apology on social media, but soon withdrew it, causing fans’ anger to boil.” Public opinion is just as cold as it was two years ago and is indifferent to Lee Da-young’s claims.”

Also, “Sisters Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-young are currently 26 years old. As the Korean women’s volleyball team has lost its competitiveness on the international stage, some fans insist on the return of the two, but the voices of opposition are overwhelming and disappear in an instant. The return of the national team I think it will happen for a while,” he added.
