Thailand introduced gambling laws 80 years ago, but only now does it argue that the state should begin the process of legalizing casinos. According to field analysts, it is being done with the aim of enhancing tourism and introducing Thailand to the international and regional casino world.

In 2006, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra planned to make casinos legal in Pattaya, but his promising plans were interrupted by the military, and he was ousted in a coup the same year. Later in 2014, the proposals received more attention and everyone’s hopes were raised again in 2016 when senior government and police officials supported the idea.

Current Prime Minister Prayut Kanocha also supported the plan and expressed his desire to make it happen. Under the ongoing plan, at least one major casino resort will be deployed in the Bangkok metropolitan area, as well as a second casino resort located on the southern Thai resort island of Phuket. According to a study by Lancet University, at least 10 underground casinos were operating in the Bangkok metropolitan area before the military regime took control in 2014. They earned between $5 billion and $5.6 billion in total annual income. Tax revenues alone could reach $2.78 billion if Thailand’s gambling industry is legalized.
